Custard Cake: The Handwritten Font That Elevates Your Campaign Typography

Choosing the Right Font Can Make or Break Your Campaign’s First Impression

I was deep into finalizing visuals for a client’s seasonal product launch when I hit a wall. The thumbnails looked flat. The Instagram carousels felt generic. The headlines weren’t catching the eye the way they needed to. That’s when I remembered Custard Cake—a whimsical, clean handwritten font I’d downloaded weeks earlier but hadn’t yet used in a live campaign.

Custard Cake isn’t just another decorative script. It’s a Script Amp-style font that brings a sense of approachable elegance to digital content. With its soft curves, natural rhythm, and subtle bounce, it adds personality without sacrificing readability. It’s the kind of font that feels custom-made, even when you’re working under a tight deadline.

How Custard Cake Fits Into Real Campaign Workflows

For this particular campaign, we were launching a line of organic herbal teas. The brand voice was warm, calming, and slightly playful—exactly the vibe Custard Cake delivers. I started by using it on the main headlines of our Instagram Stories and YouTube thumbnails. The font gave the text a handcrafted feel that stood out in fast-scrolling feeds without clashing with the brand’s existing typography system.

Next, I applied it to quote graphics we were pinning to Pinterest. These were short, inspirational phrases meant to drive engagement and shares. Using Custard Cake for the main text created a sense of intimacy, like the message was being written just for the viewer. The contrast between Custard Cake and the clean sans serif we used for body copy helped establish a clear visual hierarchy.

When to Use Custard Cake—and When to Step Back

Custard Cake shines in short-form, high-impact text. It works beautifully as a display font for headlines, logo-style text, and decorative titles. I found it most effective when used for phrases under 10 words—perfect for social media captions, callouts, and campaign labels.

However, I wouldn’t recommend it for long paragraphs or detailed descriptions. Its handwritten style, while charming, can become harder to read in dense blocks. Instead, pair it with a clean sans serif like Montserrat or Open Sans to maintain readability while keeping the design dynamic.

Designing for Mobile: Tips for Visibility and Clarity

Mobile readability was a top priority. I tested Custard Cake across different thumbnail sizes and background colors. On light backgrounds, it popped beautifully. On dark backgrounds, I increased the font weight slightly and added a subtle stroke to ensure contrast. The result? Crisp, legible text even in small previews.

For Instagram Reels covers and YouTube shorts thumbnails, I used Custard Cake sparingly—usually just one or two words in a bold color. This helped the text stand out without overwhelming the visual. The font’s natural flow made it feel like part of the scene rather than an overlay.

Font Pairing: Finding the Right Balance

One of the most powerful aspects of Custard Cake is how well it pairs with other fonts. I used it alongside a modern serif for a webinar promotion email banner, creating a layered yet cohesive look. For a landing page header, I paired it with a minimalist sans serif to keep the design clean and professional while still feeling personable.

If you’re building a branded template set, Custard Cake can anchor the more playful elements of your design. Think of it as the visual equivalent of a friendly tone in your copywriting—warm, engaging, and subtly persuasive.

What’s Inside Custard Cake: Styles, Weights, and Licensing

Before finalizing the campaign, I double-checked the font’s included styles. Custard Cake comes with a range of alternates and ligatures that add variety without breaking consistency. I used these to tweak spacing and avoid repetition across different image templates.

The font supports multiple file formats, which made it easy to use across design platforms. I worked in both Figma and Photoshop without any issues. Multilingual support was also a plus, especially since the campaign would be localized for a few international markets.

Most importantly, Custard Cake includes commercial licensing, so I could confidently use it in client deliverables, digital ads, and branded templates without worrying about usage restrictions.

Real-World Applications: From Email Banners to Social Teasers

Here’s how I used Custard Cake across different campaign elements:

Why Custard Cake Belongs in Your Design Toolkit

If you’re a marketer or content creator looking to inject some warmth into your visuals, Custard Cake is worth a try. It’s not just a font—it’s a storytelling tool that helps your message feel more personal, more memorable, and more aligned with your brand’s tone.

Whether you're designing a product launch, planning a Pinterest campaign, or setting up a week of branded social posts, Custard Cake brings a level of visual clarity that few script fonts can match. It’s the kind of font that, once used, becomes part of your design DNA.
